What you Need to Know

From 6 April 2012, the reporting requirement for over-three-day injuries to workers will change to over-seven-day injuries. From then, you must report work-related injuries where a worker has been incapacitated for more than seven consecutive days. You must still keep a record of the accident if the worker has been incapacitated for more than three consecutive days. The deadline by which an over-seven-day injury must be reported is now 15 days after the accident.

Lofstedt Report – Review Burden of Health and Safety

Professor Lofstedt, Professor of Risk Management at Kings College London, was tasked in Early 2011 to provide the government with recommendations to reduce the regulatory burdenof UK Health and Safety Regulations.

The main recomendations from the report:

1. Regulations should be based on risk not business size.
2. Consolidate sector specific regulations.
3. HSE to work more closely with the Local Authority to avoid inconsistent advice, in particular to small and low risk businesses.
4. Exempt self employed persons from regulations where they pose no risk to themselves or others (this is to exempt the work in a home office, but if they design public amenities or work at other locations, an assessment of their risks to others still exists).

These recommendations don’t change the way the Safewell team work. We have always based our work on risks first, so we can advise our clients on sensible health and safety solutions.

Sensible risk based health and safety is where the government wants health and safety to be; Safewell is already there.

Ladder Exchange 2011

HSE is launching the fourth Ladder Exchange initiative on 1 September. The annual Ladder Exchange provides UK businesses with an easy and simple way to replace broken, damaged or bent ladders and trade them in for safe new ones.

This year’s programme will run for 3 months from 1 September until 30 November.

HSE: Free Asbestos Training

HSE, via the website, is enabling the delivery of free of charge asbestos awareness training. The website allows training providers to pledge hours of free training. Tradespeople can then use the website to find out when and where the training is taking place and book themselves on to courses.

This website goes live on 5 September.

New Audiometry Service

The Noise at Work Regulations 2005 require employers to ensure that their business activities do not damage their employees’ hearing. We at Safewell can now offer a new low cost audiometry testing service, which can be used to detect early damage to hearing from workplace activities.
